Meet the brains behind your backup power. The automatic transfer switch (ATS) constantly monitors utility power. If there’s an outage or voltage drop, it automatically starts your generator to keep your home running without interruption. When power is restored, it safely switches back to the grid and shuts the generator down. Simple and seamless. Below are some of the most common ATS models in the industry—this is not a complete list.
The KOHLER® RXT Transfer Switch works exclusively with RDC2/DC2 controllers and displays utility voltage in real time. It’s UL and CSA listed, available in 100–400 amp sizes, and includes indoor/outdoor-rated aluminum enclosures. Models feature manual operation for maintenance, silver alloy contacts, and 100% equipment-rated capacity. Load center and service entrance options available. Backed by a 5-year limited warranty.
The KOHLER® RDT Transfer Switch is UL and CSA listed, available in 100–400 amp models with optional load centers. It supports 220/240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and features solid neutral, silver alloy contacts, and full equipment-rated capacity. Available in indoor (NEMA 1) or outdoor (NEMA 3R) enclosures. Includes manual contactor operation, interlocked design, and options for up to 42 circuits. Backed by a 5-year limited warranty.
The Load Control Module (LCM) is designed to prevent generator overload by shedding non-essential loads, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with NEC 2008 standards. By monitoring the generator’s current and frequency, the LCM determines when to shed loads to maintain a stable power output and protect sensitive electronics like computers and televisions from potential damage caused by frequency drops.
The LCM allows for precise management of power loads, shedding them based on their priority level. Load 1 is the highest priority and is added first, remaining in use until the last possible moment. On the other hand, Load 6 is the lowest priority and will be shed first when necessary. This ensures that essential appliances always have power, while less critical loads can be automatically turned off to preserve generator capacity. Load priorities are hard-wired during installation.
The LCM is compatible with Kohler generator sets equipped with the RDC2 or DC2 controller, including models like the 14RESA, 20RESA, 38RCL, and 48RCL. It manages up to six residential loads, including four power relays for secondary loads and two HVAC relays for air conditioning. The test button allows cycling of relays in priority order, and dual-color LEDs indicate load status. It is housed in a NEMA 3R-rated aluminum enclosure and is UL Listed with CSA certification available.
The Load Shed Kit is designed to work with RXT and RDT Automatic Transfer Switches, as well as the RDT 200 amp service entrance rated transfer switch with a 42-circuit load center. It is compatible with generator sets equipped with the RDC2 or DC2 controller, including models like the 14RESA, 20RESA, 38RCL, and 48RCL.
The Load Shed Kit automatically manages up to six residential loads. It includes two HVAC relays for controlling two independent air conditioner units and four customer-provided power relays for non-essential loads. A current transformer for load monitoring is also provided.
The Load Shed Kit disconnects non-critical loads to prevent generator overload, in compliance with NEC 2008. It monitors the generator's current and frequency to decide when to shed loads, preventing frequency drops that could damage sensitive electronics like computers and televisions. This allows for the use of a smaller generator.
